BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. -- Hilton hotels across Europe cut energy use by 10 percent last year, keeping the company on its goal of reducing energy consumption in its more than 80 hotels by 15 percent.

Water consumption in the hotels also fell by 5 percent. Hilton Hotels aims to reduce energy use in its European locations by 15 percent and water use by 10 percent by the end of 2008, compared to 2005 levels. It's also identifying and reducing chemicals used within hotels.

The company set up the goals when its launched its We Care! program at the start of 2006. Since its inception, the program has saved the hotel chain more than $9 million through reduced energy and water use.

The European Hiltons collectively also reduced carbon dioxide emissions per guest night by about 11 percent, cutting out 10,200 tons of CO2 emissions.

Hilton recognized the best-performing hotel in each of five European regions by rewarding the 1,000-plus employees at the locations with mountain bikes.

Throughout this year the hotels plan to focus on the chemicals they use in addition to cutting energy and water. Next year the We Care! program expands to reducing waste.
