DELRAY BEACH, Fla. -- Office Depot’s store prototype design earned volume pre-certification under a U.S. Green Building Council pilot program.
The LEED Portfolio Program is designed to create a volume certification path to allow companies to incorporate LEED attributes into a prototype design before implementing across several buildings. Office Depot’s first structure built using this prototype is scheduled to open in late June.
“The Portfolio Program pilot is breaking new ground for LEED and adding to our ability to scale green building’s immediate and measurable results at a much faster level,” said Doug Gatlin, USGBC’s market development vice president. “It’s a tremendous step forward in our fight to slow climate change and reduce energy dependence.”
The prototype includes high efficiency heating, ventilation and air conditioning units, reflective white roofs, solar panels, solar tracking skylights to maximize natural light, non-asphalt concrete parking lots, carpets made with recycled content, recycling programs and enhanced energy management systems.
Several retailers are involved in the pilot program, including Starbucks.
“Achieving LEED pre-certification for our prototype represents a milestone moment in Office Depot’s environmental leadership journey,” said Yalmaz Siddiqui, Office Depot’s director of environmental strategy. “What this means is that not just one store, but our core store prototype incorporates leading edge green design principles.”
