OAKLAND, Calif. -- Through a partnership between universities and California utilities, PG&E is helping to fund ventilation projects at UC Berkeley.
The utility is providing $500,000 of the $1 million cost for five ventilation projects, and has committed to giving an additional $300,000 when the projects are complete in December.
The five projects will target ventilation systems in 12 buildings and are expected to cut 3 million kilowatt hours of energy use and 96,000 therms of gas a year.
The collaboration is part of the Higher Education Energy Efficiency Partnership between the University of California, California State University and state utilities. The partnership began in 2004 and runs through 2014.
Previously, PG&E has provided $192,600 of the $321,000 spent on changing light bulbs and fixtures in 12 campus buildings and a steam-capturing system. Together, those two projects have reduced energy use by 572,000 kilowatt hours a year and 83,000 therms of gas a year.
Another energy-reduction partnership has helped halve the energy use of lighting in historical buildings in the United Kingdom.
Royal Phillips Electronics and National Trust have teamed up to install new light bulbs in about 300 of the National Trust's properties. Part of the National Trust's Big Switch initiative to replace old light bulbs in its buildings, the partnership has already provided the National trust with about 9,000 new light bulbs.
