MENOMONEE FALLS, Wis. -- The Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Energy Star label now shines at 50 Kohl’s Department Stores locations, the retailer said.

The Kohl’s stores that earned the designation form the largest group of non-supermarket retail buildings to now bear the Energy Star label, the company said last week. The EPA’s Energy Star program singles out commercial buildings and industrial plants that rate in the top 25 percent of facilities in the nation for energy efficiency.

Seven of the Kohl’s stores that were awarded the label are in Colorado, 14 are in Illinois, eight are in Minnesota, 12 are in New York, four are in Utah and five are in Wisconsin.

Green measures in Kohl’s stores include centralized energy management control systems, motion sensor lighting in stockrooms, break rooms and offices, and high-efficiency lighting, heating and cooling systems.

The retailer, which operates 957 stores in 47 states, pursues a number of environmentally friendly initiatives.

Starting this fall, the company will pursue certification for all construction of new stores built from the ground up using the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design standards.

The department store chain is the largest retail host of solar power and its distributed solar program, spanning five states, is among the larger programs of its kind in the world. Kohl’s, which became an Energy Star Partner in 1998, has received the EPA’s Green Power Leadership Award for being the No. 2 retail purchaser of renewable energy.
