CHICAGO, Ill. -- Supermarket firm Jewel-Osco is seeking LEED certification for a new green store — the company's first — that has opened in Chicago.
Eco-friendly elements at the 65,000-square-foot store in the city's Fulton River District include:
Ninety-eight percent of construction debris was recycled, the store also said.
To build the roof, contractor Weatherguard Roofing Company used 45,000 square feet of a Versico reflective, energy efficient membrane and 22,700 square feet of a modular green roof system also manufactured by Versico. Green roofs help reduce the heat-island effect created by structures, aid in the cooling, heating and insulation of buildings, reduce runoff, improve water conservation and help preserve buildings. The four green swaths on the Jewel-Osco roof were created with pre-vegetated modules and the module trays were made from 100 percent recycled materials. Interstate Roof Systems Consultants Inc. worked with Weatherguard on the project.
"We are proud of this new state-of-the-art store and we have worked to meet the rigorous demands of LEED certification," said Jewel-Osco President Keith Nielsen in a statement announcing the opening of the new supermarket last week.
LEED, which stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is the the ratings and assessment system for green building standards established by the U.S. Green Building Council.
About 200 workers will be based at the new Jewel-Osco at Kinzie and Desplaines streets. It is one of 36 stores the firm operates in Chicago. Jewel-Osco is a Supervalu company. Supervalu Inc. operates 186 stories in Illinois, Iowa and Indiana.
