CAPE TOWN, ZA -- The Green Building Council of South Africa has been accepted as the 13th full member of the World Green Building Council.

The recently formed South African organization is developing its Green Star SA ratings tools in consultation with the Green Building Council of Australia. Green Star SA-Office was released as a pilot for public comment in July. Final release of the tool is expected in November at the organization's conference in Cape Town.

The World Green Building Council, which held its founding meeting in 1999 and incorporated in 2002, formed with input from green building councils and proponents from eight countries.

The World GBC membership roster now includes the green building councils from Australia, Brazil, Canada, the Emirates, Germany, India, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, South Africa, Taiwan, the United Kingdom and the United States. The international council also maintains a list of "emerging members" for councils being vetted for full acceptance.

The Green Building Council of South Africa, which had been an emerging member for about a year, announced its acceptance as a full member this week. Its new status was approved at a meeting of the global group in Melbourne last month.
