NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Toy store icon FAO Schwarz has signed up for Energy Curtailment Specialists Inc.'s PowerPay! New York incentive program by agreeing to ease up on its draw from the grid during times of peak power need.

In exchange for participating in the demand response program, participants receive compensation from ECS. The sums involved are usually not disclosed, and details about companies' action plans during times of peak stress on the grid often are not made public.

FAO Schwarz's plan includes shutting down lighting and some computers in offices and other areas that do not involve the sales floor, according to the store and ECS.

"FAO Schwarz is committed to quality products and programs that enhance the lives of our customers," FAO Schwarz CEO Ed Schmults said in announcing his company's arrangement with ECS this week.

"It is important to take steps, big and small, to help improve our community and PowerPay! is a fantastic program that allows us to continue making progress in reducing our carbon imprint," Schmults said in a statement. "We encourage our fellow Manhattan businesses to consider joining us in this initiative."

ECS, based in Buffalo, N.Y., is the largest privately held demand response provider in North America.

FAO Schwarz has been known for its distinctive lines of toys since 1862 and now offers an Earth-friendly line of playthings.
