ISSA Hailed as Environmental Champion by EPA
LINCOLNWOOD, Ill. -- USA-ISSA, the leading trade association for the cleaning industry, joins a roster of organizations being honored for their work related to the Safer Detergents Stewardship Initiative of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and its Design for the Environment Program.
The initiative recognizes chemical manufacturers, product formulators, retailers, distributors, institutional distributors and other firms and organizations that commit to the use of safer surfactants and effectively promote their use.
A surfactant is a wetting agent that enables a cleaning solution to fully wet the surface being cleaned — which can range from the human skins and textiles to other solids —so that dirt can be readily loosened and removed.
Safer surfactants break down quickly to non-polluting compounds and help protect aquatic life in fresh and salt water. In contrast, nonylphenol ethoxylates, known as NPEs, are an example of a substance that is not considered a safer surfactant.
Almost 40 companies and organizations have been named "champions" under the initiative's recognition program and
ISSA joins a category of just a handful of non-profit organizations that share the title. The others are the
Sierra Club,
GreenBlue, the organization that promotes and fosters environmentally friendly design, and the
Textile Rental Services Association of America and
Uniform and Textile Service Association.
ISSA and other newly recognized champions will be recognized in a ceremony on November 19 in Washington, D.C.
In other developments, ISSA said this week that it has taken on the
Building Service Contractors Association International, the trade association for the building services industry, as a strategic partner. The two groups will be working more closely on events, education drives and other activities that support their shared interests.
