High LEED Ratings Won by TreePeople, The Weather Channel, Michigan Town
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The TreePeople Conference Center in Los Angeles, The Weather Channel's HD studio in Atlanta and the Hastings Public Library in Michigan are among the highly rated green structures to receive recognition from the U.S. Green Building Council.
The conference center of the reopened TreePeople Center for Community Forestry recently celebrated its LEED-Platinum certification, the highest possible of the four-tiered green building assessment and rating system maintained by the USGBC, which is based in Washington, D.C.

The conference center is at the heart of the TreePeople's four-acre environmental education campus in Los Angeles' Coldwater Canyon Park. Unique elements of the eco-friendly building include a site position and design that maximize the bright sunlight and prevailing winds of the area. Its designers also use natural principals and the native qualities of the locale to minimize the need for "imported" heating, cooling, energy and water.
Other green features include a system to capture all rainwater in an underground drainage network, store it in a 216,000-gallon cistern that also is underground, and reuse the harvested rainwater to irrigate landscaping and provide water for firefighting.
In Atlanta, The Weather Channel's new HD studio has been awarded LEED-Gold certification for its new state-of-the-art-facility that incorporates the latest technology for TWC programs on air and online — while attaining high performance in energy efficiency and other green attributes.
